«Inherent Vice», adaptación de la novela homónima de Thomas Pynchon, relato noir, es la película con la que Paul Thomas Anderson vuelve a sonar en la carrera por el Oscar, a pesar de que la Academia hasta el momento ha permanecido inmune a los influjos del director. En esta ocasión se aleja un poco de la premisa de su anterior filme, «The Master», que no obtuvo ni el éxito ni el reconocimiento esperado, al ser una cinta poco accesible para el público en general. Esta sí parece serlo, y para ello cuenta con un reparto de lujo, encabezado una vez más con uno de sus actores fetiches (otro era el recién fallecido Philip Seymour Hoffman), Joaquin Phoenix. La ganadora del Oscar Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Benicio del Toro, Jena Malone, Katherine Waterston y Maya Rudolph completan esta producción de Warner Bros.
